Square Lake Triathlon

Fuzz's girlfriend "Kaffrin's" mom (Aly) and I decided about 2 months ago to try our first triathlon. We found one on a weekend that worked for both of us and started training (the tri consisted of a 1/2 mile swim, 18 mile bike and 5 mile run). It started with me thinking I was going to have a heart attack in the pool...I am the worst swimmer and had no idea what I was doing (I still don't). The training got easier bit by bit and I must say, we were fairly prepared for what came yesterday. Aly and I got to Stillwater about 7am to get registered and get everything set up. The weather could not have been more perfect. It was about 65 and sunny when we started and 75 and sunny when we ended. I haven't been that nervous in a long time as we were standing in the water watching all the men start before we did. As they were calling our "wave" to start, I realized my heart rate went from 50-something to 90-something so I could tell the adrenaline was pumping. We started the swim and it was so much harder than I thought it was going to be. We had done an open water swim before, but we didn't account for the currents from all the other people! I got cracked in the cheek about 100 yards after I started and was glad it was my cheek and not my nose. I finished the swim faster than I had hoped but I had wobbly legs when I got out. The humerous part was that I had some major problems getting OUT of the wetsuit. I'm sure I looked like a carnival kid hopping around...that transition time sucked ;). As soon as we get the professional pictures, I will post one of the two of us in our wetsuits. We were calling ourselves "Scuba Steve..." Off to my favorite leg of the 3. The course was in the middle of farm land and rolling hills. We started with about a 1/2 mile hill to get us going followed by honestly about 30 more. It was a gorgeous course though and I actually really liked this part. I was able to recover from the swim and could tell by my heartrate that it didn't take me as long as I thought it would. I finished the bike 10 minutes faster than I thought and I think that was because I was chasing people the whole time which helped keep a consistent speed. Next time I head to Madtown, I'm going to ask Gus for bike lessons because I could tell I need to be more efficient with the gears, etc... After the bike, I knew I was in for a difficult run. I kept a snails pace but ran almost the entire way. We were greeted out of the chute by a substantial hill and also ended with another hill (thanks course designers :). The best part was David ran with me for about 1/2 a mile at the very end, just when I needed it the most. There were a ton of people around and because of the last name, I ended up with #1 so everyone yelled at me as I went by! All in all, I'm not sure if I would call it "fun," but Aly and I are definitely planning on doing another one. Aly was a rockstar and finished about 20 minutes ahead of me but we both beat times that we set out to do. Thanks to David, Mer and my mom for coming out to support because I definitely needed it!
